The LONG Weekend
Well, this past weekend was certainly a LONG weekend. Friday was uneventful, just attending a NOVI football game- and watching Uncle Dan play "ooof ball" (as matt says). We were out late, and when we got home we attempted to attach the crib tents that had just arrived by mail that day. These were needed because one night Kayla was found playing in her room- after she had been put in her crib. There were also a couple of occasions where she sat perched on the bar waiting for us. Anyway, by the time we got them on the cribs (not an easy feat) and put the VERY tired kids in, they freaked out. Deciding that they were too tired to handle the change, Peter and I agreed that we'd wait to zip the entrance until they were more used to the crib tents- and less tired.
The next morning, the kids woke up FAR too early, so I put them down for their nap. Again, they were too tired to deal with being "caged" in the crib, so I left the openings unzipped. I was out of the room about 2 mins when I heard a HUGE crash. I assumed that the shelf had fallen off the wall or something-- I was hoping it wasn't Kayla until I heard her start wailing. I went in and noticed her laying there holding her arm... and knew that the worst news was probably true. My 19-month-old baby girl had broken her arm.
Quickly I attempted to calm her down, and then called Peter who had gone up to work for a min. I told him to come home, and then called my mom to watch matt. As soon as I started talking to her, I was hysterical-- I definitely lost my mother of the year award (not that I was really in contention)-- but my heart was broke that I could have prevented this accident. Meanwhile, Matt who had called me to come get him had fallen asleep in his tent.
We went to the hospital where Kayla wore the tiniest gown they had, and attempted to keep her busy through all the waiting. Turns out she has a Taurus (?SP) fracture in her right ulna (forearm). The doctor assured us that this is a good fracture to have, and off we went-- with our baby's arm in "the smallest splint" the nurse had ever made. It was a sad day.
Fast forward to later-- we go to Grandma Lois's for a Labor Day Party (and to pick up matt who had gone with Grandma and Grandpa), and then head home. On the way home both the kids fell asleep- so we decided to stop at the other Grandma and Grandpa's to run out some energy and see Aunt Jenn. There, Kayla managed to run full speed into an end table and got a bruise below her right eye. There are times as a parent that I am tempted to put my kids in a bubble, or at least a padded room.
I guess Sunday and Monday went by without too much trouble. But after the weekend ended I did breathe a sigh of relief.
Now we're on to the next big adventure. One more weekend until our move... more on that later.
